  • Description

A Simply Stunning RARE Neuvo WW1 era Presentation watch Swiss WILKA movement Presented to the Prominent officer Col.J.W.Watson

It is pieces Like this that set appart good standard collection to truly UNIQUE collections watches with a story a history and a character that is quite simply Priceless

    Who Was Col.J.W.Watson

Lieutenant-Colonel John William Watson, C.I.E., C.B.E., born 1874; commissioned Indian Medical Service, 1898; employed as an Agency Surgeon in civil employment by the Indian Government, from October 1903; reverted to military service with the outbreak of the Great War; served in the Hospital Ship Loyalty, 1.9.1914-1.12.1918 (C.I.E., M.I.D. London Gazette 26.11.1918); the Loyalty, formerly the Royal Mail ship Empress of India, was sold to and renamed by the Maharajah of Gwalior; at the outbreak of the Great War it was converted into an Indian Army Hospital Ship, equipped with operating rooms, over 500 beds and it carried more than 15,000 war patients; advanced Lieutenant-Colonel 28.1.1918; at the end of the war returned to civil employment as Agency Surgeon for Bundelkhand, and later as Chief Medical Officer for Rajputana and Ajmer-Merwara.

As to who "His Old Friend" (AB)? the watch is presented by we may never know

    The Case

A truly art nouveau timepiece with its heavily angled Asymmetrical case as unusual and s beautiful as it is rare.

As unfamiliar as the case is there are plenty of more familiar noticings.

The case is by no means Small for a watch of its Kind at a full 27mm in diameter (excluding crown) 29.5mm inclusive and 42mm Lug tip to lug tip

The whole watch is on a CURVED angle hugging the wrist the is one of the earliest examples of this in a watch we have ever seen predating the "Curvex" watch popularization by approximately 30 years

Hallmarks on back of the watch are the infamous 14k Gold squirrel indicating a gold content of 0.585

The two piece case is screw affixed with two screws on each side of the watch the inner case marking is that of WILKA Swiss Watchmakers

    Wilka Watch Co.

This Swiss watch brand was founded in 1902 Geneve, Switzerland by Wilhelm Kaufmann.

    The Dial

The real masterpiece of this watch with its again classically associated nouveau "Exploding Numbers" very reminiscent of similar watchmakers work at the time such as "Henry Moser" to name possible the best well know. It os of course dials like this that have gone on to inspire creations like frank Mullers "exploding numbers" watches and even sighting that the "curvex" is an atribute of their "unique design" (honestly dont take our word for it.. "http://www.franckmuller.com/story/")  well we say "this is nothing new" to you and pressent yoou with a watch 100 years "ahead of the game"

    The Movement

A quality Swiss 17 Jewel Movement Mechanical hand wound sits neatly inside the inner protective case of the watch.

    The Strap

Featuring Original 10mm set into case watch strap an unusual feature but then this is in every aspect an unusual watch...

    Value?

Well how do you price Unique?  we will set the price at £1250 but to a collector of rare and interesting timepieces we can only say the sky (or the pocket) is the limit,  and with its military ties and even added air of mystery (who is AB?) who knows..
